Facet & Flow

Facet & Flow is an exhibition celebrating the versatility of wood as a medium. Artists Summer Merritt and Rainy Lehrman are both creating jewelry from wood, yet their processes are wildly different. Summer’s work has a structural and faceted look, while Rainy’s steam-bent pieces appear as if they are unfurling.

Rainy Lehrman is an artist, designer, and fabricator of objects both temporal and permanent. Often blurring the line between the hand-crafted, fine arts, and mass production, Lehrman integrates modern production methods and pushes traditional techniques through a deep understanding of materiality. She received her MFA in Sculpture from Pratt Institute in 2008 and her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2002, where she studied Furniture Design. Lehrman has taught at Pacific Northwest College of Art, William Paterson University, Pratt Institute, and is currently teaching Woodworking and Furniture Design at Kean University. Rainy lives and works as an artist, educator, fabricator, facilitator, and mom in Brooklyn, New York.

Summer Merritt brings a diverse background in art and a passion for craftsmanship to her jewelry creations. With a BFA in Design and an MFA in Sculpture from Cal State Long Beach, her artistic journey has been shaped by a strong foundation in the visual arts. While pursuing her graduate studies, she also delved into the practical world of opticianry, a decision driven by the need for consistent work and an opportunity to further develop technical skills. During her 16-year career as an optician, she worked extensively with a collection dedicated to restoring and preserving antique eyewear. This experience gave her firsthand knowledge of gold-filled frames and precision tools—skills that would later become essential at her jewelry bench. Handling delicate, timeworn materials deepened her appreciation for craftsmanship and the longevity of well-made objects.
